Rob van Loben Sels, born and raised in the Sacramento area, has been involved in both music and percussion since a very early age. While growing up he participated in middle school and high school marching band, jazz band, and concert band, and was introduced to drum and bugle corps near the end of high school. While in college at the University of Oregon he marched with the Oregon Marching Band, and during the summers he performed with the Mandarins. During his tenure there, the Mandarins became the first corps to ever three-peat in both class championships and high percussion. Upon aging out he promptly began teaching and writing in Oregon while finishing his undergraduate degree in business and computer science.
After graduating he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and continued to teach with and write for several ensembles. Of note, Rob helped lead Independence High School to several regional championships and medals while serving as Director of Percussion, including a 2-year span when the percussion section went nearly undefeated.
In 2010, Rob teamed up with a group of local educators who founded the Northern California Percussion Alliance (NCPA – nc-pa.org). He was elected to president in 2013 and remains in office today.
Rob is the owner of D’Rumpus music publishing (drumpus.com) which was created to help his fellow composers and arrangers achieve a higher level of exposure for their music. He is also the creator of ShowDay (showday.net): an event management and tabulation system that helps to run band/color guard/percussion shows more effectively and efficiently.
Rob is a member of the Vic Firth Education Team and ASCAP.
